FAQ

  • Q: What equipment do I need to run Windows Home Server?

A: Before running Windows Home Server Setup users need to find a suitable place to put their home server. The location must have an available, wired network connection, either to a broadband router or to a switch that is connected to a broadband router. To successfully use Windows Home Server, the home network must meet the following requirements:

    • Server connection 100 Mbps wired Ethernet connection
    • Home computers: One or more computers that are running a supported operating system, with either a wired or a wireless network connection
    • Broadband Internet connection
    • Broadband router/firewall device: An external Internet broadband router/firewall device with 100 Mbps wired Ethernet connection. Additionally, Windows Home Server assumes that home PCs get their IP address from the router/firewall.
  • Q: Is wireless networking supported?

A: Your customers must use an Ethernet cable to connect their home server to their broadband router or switch. Wirelessly connecting the server to a broadband router switch is not supported. However, after they have connected their home server to their home network, home PCs that are wirelessly connected to their home network will connect to their home server.
